GEXcel Conference of Workshops – Örebro University 22-25 May 2008

Supported by a grant from the Swedish Research Council Centre, Örebro University and Linköpings University launched a project to establish a European Center of Gender Excellence based in Sweden– Gendering Excellence (GEXcel): Towards a European Centre of Excellence in Transnational and Transdisciplinary Studies of Changing Gender Relations, Intersectionalities and Embodiment . In 2007-08, the theme of research sponsored by GEXcel has been “Gender, Sexuality, and Global Change,” directed by Anna G. Jónasdóttir, Professor of Gender Studies at Örebro University. (For a full description of the theme, go to http://www.genderexcel.org)

We invite applications for this conference of workshops from junior and senior scholars whose research directly addresses one of the following three sub-themes: 1) Sexuality, Love and Social Theory; 2) Power and Politics: A Feminist View; and 3) Common and Conflicted: Rethinking Interest, Solidarity, and Action.

an image and its message

apropos of the old “sexual politics of meat” debate…

here is a classic misogynistic illustration used to promote meat by telling us to “break the dull beef habit” (by imagining a woman‘s body made up of “tender juicy” beef cuts);
slideshow10.jpg

and here are two possible ways of making use of that image in order to promote vegetarianism:

  • peta‘s take, which casts a real woman in the same pose, makes the same “cuts of meat” markings on her body and just adds the text “all animals have the same parts”:
    binghamforpeta.jpg
  • an example of what i would consider a critical take, whose message to the viewer is no longer a plea to look at a cow’s body in the same way as at a woman’s body and viceversa, but rather to STOP viewing anyone – human and non-human animals alike – as being made up of “cuts” and ready for consumption, because we all should have the same right to bodily autonomy and integrity (the ecofeminist message):

  • women and tech stuff

    because unfortunately the tech-related discussions planned for ladyfest were all cancelled in one way or another, i’m listing here the materials i’d prepared for some of it, in case someone finds them useful as resources:

    really perfect definition of feminism

    reading through “The Books that changed our lives”, i came upon this perfect description (lots of other great comments from some awesome feminists in the article):

    feminism isn’t an argument or a position but a kind of sanity … a way of looking at the world that takes the humanity of female people seriously” – ariel levy [some discussion of levy’s most famous book mentioned in an older post here].

    a bit about the books that changed my life here. to which i’d add this about bell hooks, this about gloria anzaldua, this on jane eyre and this on fiul risipitor. and a feminist reading list i made a while ago here.
